Recruitment and Training

The TVP Lab has been very successful at attracting and training very talented PhD students supported by the MRCWellcome Trust, and BBSRC, as well as postdoctoral fellows from around the world supported by competitive fellowships (including Marie Curie fellowships, MRCBHF and other international fellowship schemes from Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland). Our mentoring commitments include scientific guidance, career advice, networking opportunities to facilitate access to academic positions, and technical and scientific support through the early, crucial years as an independent PI.

We have followed the careers of our trainees closely and it is good news that most remain in science. Eleven have become independent PIs in reputed universities in Europe, Canada and Thailand, and four are working as senior scientists in pharma and biotech companies. Others are still in training in highly competitive labs.

4 Year PhD Programmes

We are strongly committed to the academic development of our trainees and we sponsor them to obtain international awards and help raise their international profile by proposing them as speakers at reputed meetings. More importantly, we continue to have strong collaborative links with previous trainees as valued colleagues.

The IMS-MRL is the base for a number of inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary 4 year PhD programmes,  including the BHF PhD programme in Cardiovascular Research, the MRC programme in Obesity and Related Metabolic Diseases, and the MRC Epidemiology Unit PhD programme. Together the programmes support students undertaking interdisciplinary research at the forefront of international efforts to understand the interrelated problems of obesity, diabetes and cardiovasular disease.

Each programme has its own flavour and management, but with overlapping groups of investigators they share a similar structure and common training elements.

In the first year students undertake three 10-week mini-projects, and attend seminars and discussion groups given by group leaders and senior fellows who will provide training in a broad range of scientific disciplines and techniques. In years 2-4, students undertake a 3 year PhD project with a selected supervisor, with strong encouragement being given to the development of collaborative interdisciplinary projects.
